Announcing the US premiere of the Royal Shakespeare Company’s “elegant and beguiling” (Evening Standard) stage adaptation of Maggie O’Farrell’s best-selling novel.

Our production of Hamnet, adapted by award-winning playwright Lolita Chakrabarti (Life of Pi) and directed by Erica Whyman (former RSC Acting Artistic Director), will tour theatres in the USA in 2026.

Co-produced with Neal Street Productions, Hamnet comes to the Shakespeare Theatre Company, Washington, DC, from 17 March to 12 April 2026.

The production brings to the stage Maggie O'Farrell's story of the passionate romance between William Shakespeare and his wife Agnes Hathaway, and recounts the family tragedy that would shake them all.

Hamnet originally opened in the Swan Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon in 2023 and then transferred to London’s Garrick Theatre.

Further dates and details of casting will be announced soon.

The word Hamnet intertwined with tree branches cast a shadow over a stage with a yellow, blue and pink sunset background.
