Information for attending a performance with a school group

Seeing a show

We appreciate how much time and effort goes into organising visits to see live theatre with your students and that makes it even more special that you are choosing a visit to us.If you are seeing a show in one of our venues, the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, the Swan Theatre or The Other Place you will be welcomed upon arrive by our Front of House team. Before you arrive here is some important information to share with all attending teachers and staff..

  • It is best to arrive at least 20 minutes early for your performance. Performances in our theatres will start at the stated time on your tickets.
  • Please bring your tickets with you or collect them from the Box Office on arrival. Ideally, each student will hold their own ticket as they enter the auditorium.
  • Please note for security reasons we do operate bag searches on entry to the theatre. This includes young people and teachers. We recognise this can be time consuming and therefore recommend not bringing bags into the theatre building if possible. There is also limited space to store bags once you are seated in the auditorium.
  • Please note we operate a cashless service in our theatres, including in our shop and cafe. This is for reasons of security, but we do take Henry Cards and you can also pre-book ice-creams for the group. We do review our cashless policy at regular intervals so let us know if this causes issues for you.
  • We know that Safeguarding is a priority for all of us, and adult supervision (at a ratio of 1 adult to 10 students) is essential. We also ask that accompanying adults sit amongst their students during the performance.
  • Please note that the use of mobile phones and photography is not permitted during any performance.
  • If this is the first time your students are coming to the theatre, they might want to know that our auditoriums are built with a ‘thrust stage’ which means that all of the audience is wrapped around the stage and will feel very close to the action and the actors. It will be helpful for students to understand that talking or whispering during performances distracts other audience members and the actors and therefore we ask everyone to focus on the action on stage. A more relaxed approach to noise in the auditorium is taken for our Chilled and Relaxed performances. If you are interested in Access Performances please visit our Access pages or speak to our Box Office staff.
  • If you have any issues or queries prior to the day of the performance, please email learning.boxoffice@rsc.org.uk
